The “Adopt a piece of
land program” is designed to ensure that the trees planted are taken care
of on a regular basis. CEN will partner with local organizations
like CREER, OPADH, NATISOLEY, and other local NGOs focused on
protection of the environment. The purpose is to educate the
local communities about the “adopt the piece of land program” so they
understand that their land will not be taken away from them, and that the
adoption of land will be solely for sustainable reforestation purposes.
We will encourage families, schools, churches and others to adopt a
piece of land.
Our partners in the fourth section of the municipality in
Petion-Ville have already identified lots that could be
adopted once the program is launched. Also, they
have started educating the local farmers about the
program.
We will develop training programs for both the local land-owners and
the people who are interested in adopting a piece of land.
Trash Management System
We are designing the
program so that all neighborhood leaders sensitize people simultaneously
in terms of solid waste management to ensure consistency and
sustainability. The kick off of the program will be done simultaneously
in the whole city with the participation of the Mayor, SMCRS*, well known
singers and other stakeholders in Petion-Ville. Each singer will adopt one of
the 16 zones in Petion-Ville to keep each zone enthused and foster friendly
competition between the different zones.
We are working with our partners on the ground to work out the details of how
we are going to organize the localities so that each community will have a
committee that will be in charge of ensuring that: (1) adequate number of
trash and recycle bins are available; (2) people are using them effectively;
(3) trash is being picked up on time by government or private operators; (4)
the sensitization program is ongoing; and (5) individuals and local businesses
are contributing in kind and financially to support the trash management
system of their localities.
The committee of each locality will be composed of the president of the
neighborhood associations. They will work closely with public and
private agencies to ensure that the neighborhood
interventions complement the govt. solid waste management program for
Petion-Ville.
*SMCRS is the govt. agency in charge of solid waste management in
Port-au-Prince.
