Phillippeau School Project

Project Description

First,  we want to commit to supporting your school so you no longer have the day to day worries of where the next payroll will come from.

We applaud your draft proposal for post graduation training of your student so that they have more success in getting regular employment.

We think the plan will need to be  a sustained effort  with testing of what works best and what is of lesser value in helping your graduates find employment.

Most of all we want to support the sustained operation of your school along with the growth in the vocational training that can be provided in association with it.

Your current work at the school is to be commended and of a nature that should attract sustainable funding so that it allows you and your faculty to concentrate on additional efforts that will further the prospects of the restavek students.

From our brief discussion today here is what I propose:

CEN using my continuing pledge of support will seek to raise matching funds to meet the entire budget you submitted ($16,000  yearly operations and additional funds for the new vocational initiative).

i) a current accounting of unpaid school expenses that need to be found in order to complete the current school year without debt.  We can cover those costs immediately, so that you and your teachers can focus on the new initiative and the next school year with enthusiasm.

ii)  a more comprehensive inventory of school operations including the number of children currently enrolled, their ages and grade levels, the curriculum you presently teach outlined, and if possible description of family and if restavek the family they currently board with in Philippeau.

These descriptors  for every student will help us in informing initial donors that will match my contribution.  We will be using Faithify, Unitarian Universalist General Assembly presentations and our Facebook website to get sustained yearly matching contribution to the amount I am pledged to commit yearly.  Having good documentation of current and future improvements to the school programs will be critical to getting sustained support.

iii) a revised plan for the initial vocational program in which for this year's graduates you focus on one vocational training program (rather than 4) and give scholarships to those few students that have the greatest aptitude and interest in the selected area (e.g., hospitality services or plumbing from your previous list)

We think it will take some time to think through the vocational training mentoring - in which your teachers  will need to spend the entire pre-graduation year identifying their interest and working with outside mentors in that profession to identify those students most likely to benefit from the available training programs.  If we can set up a system of school and outside mentors, the vocational training scholarship are more likely to lead to success.  That success will reinforce  teacher, student and donor acceptance and enthusiasm for improving and expanding the program

I hope we can continue the discussion in a way that helps you devise the best program that will work for you and your students.

I definitely want to commit to making this work financially and pledge to continue to support the effort for 5 years as long as CEN can generate matching donor funds and you can provide good documentation of results - including both what works and what doesn't. Our goal is long-term success and improvements so we need the best plan moving forward and the ability to correct things within that plan whenever we see there is a better way.
